Welcoming Friends and Family into our Labs

As soon as we enter the workforce, one of the most common questions people ask us is perhaps this; “So, what do you do?”. As a team, we thought, what better way to show our friends and relatives what we do than inviting them to our lab?

Yesterday, on the 29th of July 2024, OrganoVIR Labs opened its doors for the third Open Lab Hour. Eighteen visitors were welcomed in the laboratories of OrganoVIR Labs. These visitors are friends and families of the members of the OrganoVIR Labs team.

The Open Lab Hour began with a presentation by research technicians, Joep Korsten and Eline Freeze, who provided a brief introduction to organoids and organ-on-chip technology.

Afterwards, the session continued with a tour of our labs. At Amsterdam UMC, our researchers work in two different labs; the organoid culture lab, where our researchers culture brain, lung, and gut organoids, and the virus infection lab, where our researchers infect human organoids with human viruses. In the labs, visitors are shown organoids under the microscope and were provided with insights on how organoids are used in virus research.

“It was so nice to finally see my friend’s work environment!” said one of the visitors at the end of the tour. “Thank you OrganoVIR Labs for opening the doors for us visitors, I learned something new today, and that is what an organoid is. It was nice to see where my daughter is working!” said another.
