On Friday, the 7th of June 2024, Giulia Moreni will be defending her thesis “The unexplored desert of Enterovirus C and the search for antivirals. Insights from human organotypic models”.
At OrganoVIR Labs, Giulia has been working on the propagation of uncultivable Enteroviruses (EVs) in human 3D models. The goal of her project is to develop alternative 3D models that reflect the human physiology, facilitating the study of viral tropism, pathogenesis, and offering a platform for antiviral testing. As such, she is using human airway epithelium (HAE) to mimic the airway, human intestinal epithelium (HIE) for the gut, and iPSC-derived brain organoids for the human central nervous system.
Prof. Dr. Dasja Pajkrt is her promotor along with Dr. Katja Wolthers and Dr. Adithya Sridhar as her co-promotors.
Giulia’s PhD defense will take place at 10:00 A.M. at Agnietenkapel, Oudezijds Voorburgwal 229-231, Amsterdam.
